In 2019, Telford & Wrekin Council declared a climate emergency. It is now working, along with partners, to go carbon neutral by 2030 – and to reduce single-use plastic across the council by 2023!

Green Wood Centre Biomass Heating

Small Woods is the organisation for everyone who is involved in hands-on management of small woodlands, whether as owners, managers, volunteers, woodland and coppice workers or community woodland members.

We promote sustainable living through a wood based economy by running courses and events in sustainable woodland management, coppicing, crafts and related activities. We hold many activities at the Centre including woodland volunteering projects, fun family sessions and woody events for the whole community.

Small Woods vision

‘To see small woods in the UK valued for the benefits they bring to a sustainable society, and to help achieve their better management to make the most of those benefits.’

The Green Wood Centre, National HQ is based in Coalbrookdale just a short way from historic Ironbridge and provides an innovative headquarters for Small Woods set in the woods of the Ironbridge Gorge.

The inspiring Woodland Hall, available for hire, has sweet chestnut pillars, a peaceful environment and an energy efficient design which make it a perfect venue for a wide range of events. The site is also home to the Green Wood Café, a retail outlet for coppice products, the woodland craft area, woodland camp and year round access to woodland walks around the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.

The Green Wood Centre is heated using biomass sustainably produced from local woodlands using biomass sustainably produced from local woodlands. This not only stimulates regrowth in the woodlands, ensuring they continue to sequester Carbon, but also displaces the use of fossil fuels for heating. During the winter months, several buildings on site are heated through a mini 'district heating' system, using a log-fired boiler that typically requires loading just twice-a-day. Crucially, the logs are processed and seasoned to less than 20% moisture content in order to maximise the efficiency with which they are combusted and minimise emissions that could adversely affect air quality.

Telford Woods is a partnership, established by Telford & Wrekin Borough Council and Small Woods, to develop a Social Enterprise aiming to improve the Borough's woodlands, whilst engaging the community to support health, wellbeing, educational and occupational needs through woodland-related activity.
